Future Proofing Staveley Ice & Curling Rink
Due to increasingly warmer winters, achieving the ice thickness required for a natural rink has become more difficult. Because the original rink was built on a stone and soil base, it required approximately four inches of ice before it could safely open to the public. In comparison, a refrigerated concrete pad requires only around two inches of ice.
The installation of a refrigerated concrete rink has transformed the future of the facility. It allows us to guarantee a reliable season of at least three months each year, regardless of weather conditions, and helps secure this much-loved community asset for future generations.
Planning and construction of the project took place across 2022, 2023 and 2024. A major milestone was reached on 1 July 2023, when the Staveley Community Society proudly opened the new $1.3 million refrigerated ice rink. This significant investment ensures the rink can continue serving the community and visitors for decades to come.
